Apple Announces New Hardware as Microsoft’s Windows 7 Nears Launch
One day after announcing earnings that jumped 46% in fiscal Q4 2009, Apple announced a load of new hardware, including a new iMac and 13-inch MacBook, revamped Mac Mini, and a new Magic Mouse.Monday’s earnings propelled Apple stock over $200 per share in aftermarket trading on that afternoon. Apple reportedly sold more Macs and iPhones than in any previous quarter, and posted revenue of $9.87 billion and a net quarterly profit of $1.67 billion, or $1.82 per share. In fiscal Q4 2008, Apple had revenue of $7.9 billion and net quarterly profit of $1.14 billion, or $1.26 per share. Gross margin was 36.6% vs. 34.7% a year ago. With Microsoft’s Windows 7 launch coming on Thursday, Apple was rumored to be planning a hardware announcement to take some shine off of Windows 7. The announcement will do that, at least for a while. The new iMacs, move from aluminum and polycarbon to aluminum and edge-to-edge glass. Does this remind you of anything, like perhaps the all-aluminum MacBook Pros? The new iMac will come in 21.5″ (1,920 x 1,080, $1,199 starting price) and 27″ (2,560 x 1,440, $1,699) models, both with a 16:9 aspect ratio.Meanwhile, the entry-level polycarbonate MacBook was revamped as well. It’s still polycarbonate, but it’s unibody now, moving all of Apple’s notebooks to unibody construction. It also has seven-hour battery that’s built in, just like on the MacBook Pro, which is a positive and a negative (not user-replaceable).The Mac Mini was reworked today, as well. The entry-level Mini still sells for $599; it has a new 2.26 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo chip, NVIDIA GeForce 9400M integrated graphics and a 160-gigabyte hard drive. A higher priced is priced at $799, with the CPU upped to 2.53 GHz and the hard drive to 320 GB. Apple also launched a Mac Mini server for $999, targeted at small businesses that can’t afford an Xserve. Finally, a mouse. The Magic Mouse sort of replicates the multi-touch touchpad on Apple notebooks, right down to the two-finger gesture movements for scrolling up and down and for moving back and forth between Web pages. You can also configure it to operate as a two-button mouse, recognizing clicks toward its right edge as a right button click. The Magic Mouse comes ues capacitive touch and is standard with the aforementioned new iMac. It will be available at the end of October through the Apple Store.
